This is the first post for this page and as such I descided it needed to be where everyone should start when it comes to living within the SCA. This would be at the point for Persona Development. It is in capitals which means it should be important.
When it comes to Early Period personas the story is the best part. There are so many directions an early period persona can go that goes against most of the movie preconcieved notions. These would be things like being dumb, dirty, rude, and only interested in killing, raping and looting. There are reasons films like that tend to fail. These people are shown without any depth. A good persona is something that takes a long time to work out, but when it is done right things just make more sense.
When alot of people, SCA included, think about an early period persona they mainly think of T-tunics and pants when it comes to clothing. Alot of people choose this path because the construction is simple and once that is over they can go play. I have been working for awhile now on documented construction of a "T-Tunic" and I think it is far more then just placing a t-shirt on some folded fabric. If it takes so long to make the materials why do you want to cut any off? Wouldn't you want to use every bit of the materials it took so long to spin and weave? But this is an article for a different time. And another preconvieved notion is that if you are interested in really fancy outlandish clothing you have to be interested in late period cultures. People who think that must have not seen the clothng the Scythians wore. They wore pokadots!!
There are so many cultures that people rarely look into. Looking around my own kingdom I see alot of Vikngs and Celtic and that tends to be it for earl period. Don't take it the wrong way, there are some very very well done Vikings and Celtic personas out there. I just want you to know that there ar other options as well. Just do not pick a persona because you think it is easy. Pick one you love enough to make it a part of your self. You are creating a new you. Do not just pick the first one because you think it is easy. No persona is easy even if there is alot of information on the culture.
The following site has alot of information on Early period arts and science as well as a good introduction on persona development. So insead of giving an overview of their work I have provided the link.
